The Suffolk LTA Inter-club Doubles 2018 tennis tournament took place last weekend. As in many years we were graced with some fine sunny weather which was ideal and resulted in some great tennis being played on the grass courts at Felixstowe Lawn Tennis Club. Despite the poor response from many of the clubs in the County, 11 men’s teams took part from 7 clubs (Felixstowe, Hadleigh, Ipswich Sports Club, Risbygate, Stowmarket, Woodbridge & Wortham). In the ladies competition 8 teams took part from 5 clubs (Felixstowe, Ipswich Sports Club, Sproughton, Wortham, YM). First round losing teams then played in a Consolation event. It was interesting to see that none of last year’s winning teams won any trophies for this year’s competition, In the Men’s finals Felixstowe 1 the experienced pair of James Yates & Charlie Fulcher came back from losing the first set to overcome a strong challenge from Risbygate of a very competitive pair of Gary Keens & up and coming future player of son Asa Sumner-Keens 3-6 7-5 10-6. In the ladies competition Ipswich Sports Club Louise Woods & Sophie Taber 1 overcame an equally strong challenge from YM Laura Mee & Ruth Acworth 6-2 6-3. In the Men’s Consolation event Risbygate 2 overcame Ipswich Sports Club 2 winning 6-3 4-6 10-3. For the ladies consolation event Ipswich 2 defeated Sproughton 6-3 7-6 to complete the clean sweep of the ladies event. It was great to see some fine tennis being played in a friendly but sporting manner, which was a credit to all teams taking part. This event is a great opportunity for Suffolk Clubs doubles pairs to play and enjoy a great tennis competition. Hopefully the word will get around to more doubles pairs to play next year. Refreshments were kindly made available by volunteers from the Felixstowe LTC. Thanks, were also given to Felixstowe LTC for the use of their Tennis Courts, to Steven Pilcher referee for arranging the draw and running the competition on the day & also to Sheelagh Watts for carrying out all the administration duties. A great team effort.
