Framlingham Lawn Tennis Tournament
13th August 2018 Polyspiral
In County News

Despite rain all the matches were finished in the week- long Framlingham Lawn Tennis Tournament.  The last ended at 21 :54 on August 11th when Maddie McLoughlin and Tom Skinner won the Under 18s Mixed Doubles, Maddie making a great recovery from losing the Suffolk Ladies Singles to Katie Tassell on the same court earlier in the day.

This was the 11th time Katie had won the Suffolk Singles. An extraordinary achievement. It came on the 30th anniversary of her first victory aged 13. Then she beat some great players on the way, Louise Rogers in the semi – final and Sue Fulcher in the final.

However, Maddie and another 14 year of Rising Star of Suffolk Ladies Tennis, Isabelle Eaton, won the Suffolk Ladies Doubles.

Stars who have risen over the last 10 years from Group 5 to winning the County Championship, Jez Cowley and Matt Hough, won the Suffolk men’s doubles

The Tournament saluted this brilliant achievement and previous Country Captains, Julian Tatum, Graeme Coult and Ian Moore did so as they were presented with the cup.

Many other former players came to celebrate the 125th Tournament. I consider it was a resounding success. The Committee and other volunteers worked hard to provide extra activities and a wonderful Vintage tea.

The Tournament caters for a remarkable range of ages. In the 8 and Under it was wonderful to see Tournament dynasties continuing when Liban Ahmed’s son won and so did Katie Tassell’s daughter

At the other end of the age spectrum another Suffolk player, the charismatic Adrian McInerney of Aldeburgh, won the Over 65 Men’s singles.

Two   graceful Suffolk players, Sarah Wells and Janie Taylor, teamed up successfully to beat 2 other Icons on the Tournament, Susan Bennett and Sadie Tilbrook, in The Over 50s Ladies Doubles.

The new Tournament Committee Member, Richard Daynes, won the Over 40s Mixed Doubles.

There was a wonderful result in the Ladies over 40s Doubles when Joan Hassell (playing the her 60th Framlingham Tournament) won with her daughter, Julia Giles.
